John Shelford Opal Beds

The Lakes District is a rich hunting ground for the avid rockhounder. There are sites within a few hours drive from Burns Lake, while others can be hiked to or are accessible by boat. From Francois Lake to Babine Lake, to Ootsa Lake you can discover agates, an array of different coloured jaspers, rhyolites and red carnelian agates.

If it is opals you are looking for, explore the John Shelford Opal Beds found on Eagle Creek Road on Highway 35 south of Burns Lake.  Be prepared to dig for the opals as they are buried deep in the rocks!
